The Dunn Center is in North Rocky Mount at North Carolina Wesleyan College. The
address of the college is 3400 N. Wesleyan BLVD, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 and the
phone directly to the Dunn Center is 252-985-5197. Note that gallery hours are
M-F, 9-5. Unless there is a concert or other performance Saturday night, April
10, you will need to arrive on Friday in time to see the exhibit before it
closes on Friday at 5:00.

This was sent from NCWC. Ann Harwell: Visionary Quilts, will be on display at
the Dunn Center at NCWC, March 26-April 25.
Ann Harwell has pushed the envelope of the quilting tradition to a level
where her fabric constructions reflect her peerless precisionist craft
and express her visionary genius. The Mims Gallery at NC Wesleyan
College is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of seventeen
of Harwell’s remarkable quilts; a free opening reception party for the
artist will be held in the gallery from 7-9 p.m. Friday evening, March
26. This will be a chance for area quilters, art admirers, community
families and curiosity seekers to meet Ann Harwell and hear what she has
to say about her very specialized work.
Harwell’s studio is at Raleigh’s Artspace on Davies Street, a fun place
to visit for art lovers, especially First Fridays. There we find the
carefully planned “anatomy” of her challenging pictorial fabric
compositions of rare fabrics and modulated color in blues and reds
fitted together in a complex “tesserae” of fabric shapes uniquely cut
for each quilt. All this she stitches together on her “pet” 1945 Singer
Featherweight sewing machine. Here in the Mims Gallery we see the
outcome of her incredible fabric puzzles transformed into visually
magnetic woodsy waterfalls, gothic church interiors and astronomical
heavenly phenomena.
Ann Harwell has a long and impressive career as an artist with many
exhibitions and awards. Quilting is a family tradition for Ann Harwell.
She first learned from her grandmother as a child and has since built a
long and impressive career as an artist with many exhibitions and
awards. Throughout her professional years teaching preschool she quilted
and after retirement from teaching in 1997 has made quilting a full time
pursuit.
Too many to mention, few of her exhibitions include the 2007 Sky’s the
Limit, International Quilters Association National Tour and the 2008
Tear in the Fabric: Conceptually Driven Quilt Exhibit at Cal-Poly in San
Luis Obispo, CA. Amongst her many prizes a few highlights are the 2007
New Work Merit Award at Raleigh’s Artspace; 2005 Second Place Innovative
International Quilt Association, Houston, Texas; 2003 Gold Award, Quilt
Nihon, in Tokyo, Japan; 2000 Blue Ribbon & Best of Show, Raleigh Capital
Area Quilters; 2004 Triangles Best at the Museum of Contemporary Art in
Raleigh. Two of America’s most prestigious magazines have recognized and
featured Harwell’s quilts: Folk Art Magazine, Summer 2002 and the
National Geographic Society Magazine, April 1999.
The exhibition runs from March 26 until April 25 and gallery is open to
the public Monday thru Friday 9-5. We welcome tours by appointment.
252-985-5268. Ann Harwell’s quilts are for sale and will make a
wonderful and appreciable addition to your home art collection.

Hi!
I have a great opportunity coming up and was hoping that your SAQA regional blog might be willing to help. Recently I signed an exhibition contract with the Office of Cultural Affairs in Charleston for a solo show at City Gallery at Waterfront Park during MOJA 2010, Sept. 10 – Oct. 10, 2010. The work they selected is my Decision Portrait Series. The space is GIGANTIC….I’m talking about several rooms spread over two floors. Although I have over 45 pieces completed, I need about 45 more. Doing the work is not the problem. Finding the people willing to participate is! I have a blog that explains the concept, documents the work, and includes a “wish list” for future pieces….although I’m totally open to new ideas as there are thousands of decisions that people make every day….big or small. Anyway, the pieces are technically all “quilts”…in the sense that there are three layers held together with stitch. Would it be possible to post my request for “models” on your blog? Is there any other way in which you could network this need? To participate in the series, one must only email me their decision with a digital image and physical address. I will provide the standard model’s release and a self-addressed, stamped return envelope. I generally share the completed work with each participant before posting it on my blog…..giving each person an opportunity to make suggestions about the statement accompanying the image on the Internet. I don’t need to use anyone’s real name but am also happy to include it and links to whatever website or blog is appropriate. Each participant will also receive an invitation to any exhibitions. Thanks for considering posting this!
Thanks!

As an artist begins to explore an avenue for his vision, one of these
three approaches often presents: Abstraction to convey ideas through
non-representation, an Allegory to use symbols to tell the story, or
the Analytical approach to separate an idea into component parts. The
artists in this show use a variety of media in one or more of these
approaches. Libby and Jim Mijanovich are one of a select group of
artists invited to participate in this exhibition.
